(ACP Area Control Procedural - ACS Area Control Surveillance)
Area Control Surveillance Rating
ICAO 054 - 5 to 6 weeks
An Area Control Surveillance (ACS) rating entitles the holder to provide the air traffic control service in control areas with the use of surveillance equipment.

To be valid, the rating must include either a radar, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) endorsement.

ICAO Technical Guidelines: Course 054
Course Objective: To provide the trainee with a comprehensive introduction to radar in general and to learn the theoretical knowledge and attain the practical skills in radar procedures and techniques to enable them to provide an Area radar service in a simulated ATS radar environment.

ICAO 054 Course Outline: The course includes theoretical and practical instruction in the following:

• Introduction to Radar
• Theory of Primary Radar Operation
• Radar in the ATC Environment
• General Provisions
• Radar in the ATC Service
• Radar Simulation Equipment
• Familiarization with Simulator
• Introduction to the Simulation Environment
• Radar Identification—Primary Radar
• Radar Coverage
• Co-ordination between Radar Controllers
• Basic Vectoring Techniques
• Separation between Identified Aircraft—Primary Radar
• Vectoring and Separation—Primary Radar
• Avoiding Action
• Types of Radar and their Applications
• Interruption of Radar Control
• Technical Factors Affecting the Provision of Radar Control
•Wake Turbulence
• Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR)
• SSR Procedures—General
• SSR Code Allocation
• SSR Identification

An Area Control Procedural (ACP) rating entitles the holder to provide an air traffic control service in control areas without the use of surveillance equipment.

ICAO Technical Guidelines: Course 055
Course Objective: To provide the trainee with a comprehensive introduction to Non-Radar Area Control and to develop specific theoretical and practical skills which will enable them, after a suitable period of on-job training, to reach the required level of expertise for successful completion of an Area Control Rating.
