This course is intended for teachers of aviation English who are required to assess and rate the English language capabilities of pilots, air traffic controllers, according to the Language Proficiency Requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as set out in ICAO Document 9835.

This course focuses on interpreting the language criteria of the ICAO Rating Scale, developing tools and a scoring process to reliably and accurately measure pilots and ATCOs English language performance.

The duration of the training: The AVIATION ENGLISH EXAMINER / RATER COURSE lasts also lasts from 1 to 3 weeks. Unfortunately, there are always money constraints, and typically customers who are budget-driven choose one or two weeks of training. However, studies indicate that short intensive courses are not necessarily effective in enabling teaching staff to become effective Aviation English teachers. That is the reason why; Objective-driven customers choose three weeks of training (six weeks in all) and some even require team follow-up and future project support to build the training system.

1. -The one-week course teaches the examiner candidate the standards by which they should abide.

  • Identifying and rating appropriate levels of competence in communication skills, based on the 6 criteria of the ICAO Rating Scale.

  • Identifying and recording areas for development in failed candidates’ performance and guiding them towards improving their language proficiency.

  • Evaluating and comparing different types of language performance, types of exams based on careers.

  • Assessing both; Listening (general comprehension, interpretation and discrimination) and Speaking (accuracy, intelligibility and communicative competence)

2.- The two-week course teaches the examiner candidate the standards by which they should abide and introduces to them the way they should build the examining and rating tools.

3.- The three- week course teaches the examiner candidate the standards by which they should abide, introduces to them the way they should build the examining and rating tools, plus the Master Examiner will build a detailed Examining System with the students.
